Comprehensive Literacy Improvement Plan (CLIP)
Shelby County Schools is currently revamping literacy instruction in our district. The roll-out of the plan will begin on March 7 at our make-up District Learning Day. The goals of the literacy plan are to provide the following:
- a concerted effort to ensure a clear and common vision for improving literacy teaching and learning districtwide—across schools, grade levels, content areas, and roles;
- clarity of expectations (e.g., targeted instructional design, aligned best practices, and “look fors”), including the development of a deep understanding of the “why” and “how” behind these (to ensure more meaningful implementation, not reduction to an implementation checklist);
- opportunities for staff to take some risks and practice new approaches (with a deeper understanding of why and how) in a safe space, receive some early, informal feedback and assess their own learning needs;
- high-quality professional development aligned to the District's vision and staff needs; and
- thoughtful pacing of implementation.
